Eighty9-Winner-Sustainable-Packaging

Zero Waste

We are all trying to do our bit to combat waste and climate change; at Eighty9 we’ve analysed our processes to find ways in which we can reduce waste and make practical changes that demonstrate our commitment to going green.

So we’ve come up with a new environmental initiative to cut packaging for trade customer re-orders – and it simply makes sense..

No more bags. No more cardboard.

The Benefits

This is a hassle-free and efficient process. It cuts out all the unnecessary waste and it helps our clients go greener too. Obviously there has been a significant amount of planning and also cost involved in producing and supplying the tins and crates however as one of Ireland’s leading coffee suppliers – we’re delighted to lead the way in this context of reducing plastic packaging through sustainable coffee.

We should mention – the tins and crate look slick too and can really add to the aesthetic appeal of your premises and confirm the authenticity of the great coffee you serve!

To organize an order, we are just a phone call away.

For Trade Re-orders – No more bags. No more cardboard. It’s all good for the environment.

How does it work now?

We have taken the initiative to design and manufacture 3 kg coffee tins, branded with our logo, which we are supplying to our customers. The tins can be re-filled instead of wasting new packaging on every order. The tins have been specially designed to assist with degassing, to keep the coffee fresh, and also to help with the pouring of coffee beans from the tin into a coffee grinder.

So once the coffee is cooled, it’s put into the tin and then degassed for a couple of days. When it’s adequately degassed – we put the lid on the tin, and close the tin with a tamper proof seal. The tins then go into our specially designed Eighty9 crates – they are 3 kg tins and 2 go in a crate, so that’s 6 kg of coffee per crate – shipped directly out to each customer.

When it’s time to re-order, customers can simply ring and let us know – we then collect the tins and the crates, and we go through the cycle again.

What Happened Before?

When our trade customers – coffee shops, offices, hotels across Ireland – order their coffee; we roast the coffee beans in our probat coffee roaster – fresh of course, and cooled in our cooler. At this point, once the cooling process is complete, we used to bag it and deliver it straight out to the customer.

Of course this was single-use packaging (a bag for the coffee, and a box for all the bags) so it was number one on our hit-list in terms of our mission to move to a more sustainable way of doing business. It also impacted many small and large businesses around the country and we wanted to help these sole traders and companies to be greener too.
